- La troposphère;
- La stratosphère;
- La mésosphère;
- Tropopause;
- Stratopause;
- Mésopause;
- Thermopause.
Earth’s atmosphere is divided into four distinct layers:
- Troposphere
- Stratosphere
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere
Note: To identify each of the transition zones between these layers, the suffix "sphere" is simply replaced with "pause," to give:
- Tropopause
- Stratopause
- Mesopause
- Thermopause
Jet streams are powerful winds caused by the strong contrast between the troposphere and stratosphere; this topic will be discussed in further detail later.
In the transition area of the tropopause, the temperature starts at a chilly -56°C and warms up slowly as it reaches the stratosphere.
The height of the tropopause above the poles is about 26,000 feet (8 kilometres) from the surface, while at the equator is at about 59,000 feet (18 kilometres), averaging 36,000 feet (11 kilometres).
5 - Exosphere
There is one more layer that has minimal impact on both aviation and weather called the exosphere.
This layer marks where the earth can no longer hold on to particles. The particles are now in direct contact with space, interacting with radiation. This layer is where aurora borealis occurs.
And because a picture's worth a thousand words:
